Host an AHLS Course

With more than 15,000 health care professionals trained, AHLS is becoming the standard hazmat training program for medical emergency responders.

By hosting a course in your area or for your organization, you are providing your healthcare professionals the critical skills necessary to protect your community from hazmat incidents such as chemical spills or dirty bombs.

Who can be an AHLS course host?

AHLS can be offered in any city around the world. Any AHLS Verified Instructor (there currently are over 1,200) is able to apply and host a course.  If you do not have a Verified AHLS Instructor in your community, you can:

  1. Become an Instructor by taking the Provider/Instructor course offered in another community.  See Upcoming Courses for a list of courses scheduled.
  2. Call AHLS Headquarters at (520) 626-2305 or contact your AHLS Regional Director to obtain a list of AHLS Verified Instructors who can assist you in offering the course.

What are the course requirements?

Each course requires the following to be available for each AHLS PROVIDER course:

  1. A Board-Certified Toxicologist. In the United States, he or she must be certified through the American Board of Applied Toxicology (ABAT) or the American Board of Medical Toxicology (ABMT) or the Medical Toxicology Sub-Board of the American Boards of: Emergency Medicine, Pediatrics or Preventive Medicine and hold current AHLS Instructor status.
  2.  A Medical Director. This must be a physician with AHLS Instructor status. (If your Board-Certified Toxicologist is a physician, the Medical Director and Toxicologist are filled by the same person.)
  3. AHLS Verified Instructors: 1 Instructor per every 25 students, with a minimum of 2 Instructors per class.

The AHLS for Chemical Burns, AHLS for Toxic Terrorism and AHLS Instructor courses do not require the board-certified toxicologist or medical director.

AHLS can refer you to Verified Instructors, Medical Directors and Board-Certified Toxicologists who can assist you in hosting a course.  Each instructor for AHLS will negotiate their own fees (see “How much does AHLS cost?” below).

How long does it take to plan a course?

We recommend that courses should be planned at least 6 months in advance.  This time frame allows for marketing your course to the community, taking registrations, planning course logistics, ordering books, etc.  Courses can be hosted in less time for special circumstances.

Please call the AHLS Headquarters (520) 626-2305 if you need to host a course sooner than 6 months.

How much does AHLS cost?

Each AHLS course host develops their own budget when submitting their application.  The charts below shows the cost per participant that is paid to AHLS International Headquarters:

Discounts are available for host sites having over 40 or 80 people trained in a fiscal year of July 1 - June 30.

The recommended cost is the AHLS fee plus an additional amount that should cover room rental, food, instructor fees, etc.

Can I use U. S. Federal or State Grants to host a course or send my staff to a course?

YES!

Courses offered by the Advanced HAZMAT Life Support Program are approved by the Office of Grants and Training (formerly Office of Domestic Preparedness).  Organizations can use state and federal preparedness grants to offer AHLS courses at free or reduced rates to participants in their states. Each state has different grant application procedures and we recommend you contact your state's Homeland Security Director for specific information prior to making any financial commitments.

How do I apply?
The first step in hosting a course is to complete the online application and Preliminary Budget.  The application should be submitted 6 months in advance of your proposed course date.  (Contact AHLS Headquarters at (520) 626-2305 if 6 months in not possible to discuss possibilities.)  A $25 application fee and preliminary budget are required with the application form and can be paid online.

The AHLS Course application can be found on the AHLS website.  Click on "Not a User? Register here." A username and password must be established to access the application. Once logged on, select “Course Management” on the left column and then select “Create a Course” for the application.

After AHLS Headquarters receives your online application, it will be reviewed by AHLS Headquarters and your Regional Director and you will receive a response within two weeks.  Once the application is approved, the Course Director and designated Course Administrators will receive access to secure information on the website where step-by-step instructions and necessary documents are available.

Our website is optimized to work with Internet Explorer 11 or higher and Firefox 12 or higher. If you are not using either of these browsers, some aspects of the form may not work.

How do I get the word out about our course?
AHLS can assist you in marketing your course.  Once your course is approved, you let us know if you would like an email ad designed or a brochure.  The Marketing Toolkit with marketing tips and professionally designed materials, such as brochures, fliers and advertising that can be customized and downloaded is available for course directors. Your course will automatically be listed on the AHLS website and provided an email ad for distribution.
